WASHINGTON (September 18, 2025) — Today, the Council for Innovation Promotion (C4IP) congratulated Director John Squires on his confirmation as the new Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Throughout his career, Director Squires has been a strong advocate for IP policies that promote research investments and entrepreneurship. C4IP hopes he will continue to bolster American creativity by upholding critical IP protections, working to reduce patent and trademark application backlogs, and supporting American innovators and entrepreneurs in bringing cutting-edge technologies to market.
C4IP extends its appreciation to former USPTO Acting Director Coke Stewart for her dedicated service and leadership, especially for her many actions directed to strengthening the IP system and reducing application backlogs. We believe that her work has set the stage for Director Squires to have an especially strong start as he takes the helm at the USPTO, and are confident that her strong leadership will continue as she assumes the role of Deputy Director.
We look forward to working with Director Squires, Deputy Director Stewart, and the entire USPTO team to advance policies that protect inventors and entrepreneurs, incentivize technological breakthroughs, and maintain America’s leadership in the global economy.
