WASHINGTON (April 24, 2025) — Today, Executive Director of the Council for Innovation Promotion Frank Cullen released the following statement ahead of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day on April 26, which this year spotlights the role of IP in shaping the global music landscape:
“This year’s World IP Day shines a light on how intellectual property fuels the music industry — empowering artists, producers, and entrepreneurs to create, share, and earn a living from their work.
“From songwriting and performance rights to licensing and streaming, IP protections are the backbone of a music ecosystem that is more accessible, diverse, and dynamic than ever before.
“In 2024, global recorded music revenues surpassed $29 billion, underscoring the industry’s economic significance. In the United States alone, the music industry supports millions of jobs and contributes $170 billion to the GDP. This continued growth is made possible by strong IP protections, like copyrights, trademarks, and patents, that incentivize creativity and reward risk-taking.
“Whether it’s global icons or your favorite local band, IP allows creators to safeguard their work and be fairly compensated, fostering a cycle of reinvestment and innovation. These protections underpin the development of emerging technologies in the music space, including AI-assisted music production and immersive audio experiences, that are transforming how music is made and enjoyed.
“As the music industry continues to evolve, C4IP remains dedicated to advocating for policies that strengthen protections for artists and creators. That’s why we support legislation like the NO FAKES Act, which helps to prevent unauthorized use of AI to copy creators’ voices and visual likenesses. Passing this legislation is critical to preserving artists’ creative integrity and ensuring a viable path to success in the digital age.
“In celebrating World IP Day 2025, C4IP calls on policymakers, industry leaders, and communities to champion strong IP systems that expand opportunities for creative expression, economic growth, and cultural enrichment worldwide.”
