Council for Innovation Promotion Applauds the SHOP SAFE Act

WASHINGTON (October 3, 2023) — Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Intellectual Property Subcommittee will hold a hearing on the recently introduced SHOP SAFE Act of 2023. Frank Cullen, executive director of the Council for Innovation Promotion, issued the following statement in support of the bill:

“The introduction of the SHOP SAFE Act by Chairman Coons and Ranking Member Tillis is a necessary step toward making online shopping safer for American consumers and reinforcing the IP rights of trademark holders.

“As e-commerce has grown, so too has the number of counterfeit goods available to unsuspecting customers online. Right now, it’s largely each brand’s responsibility to police online platforms and keep Americans safe from counterfeit goods, which takes considerable amounts of time and money. The bipartisan SHOP SAFE Act would appropriately require platforms to take a greater share of this responsibility to monitor their own sites.

“The legislation will take meaningful steps to reduce the availability of counterfeit goods that siphon billions of dollars and countless jobs from our economy and stunt innovation. C4IP urges Congress to pass the SHOP SAFE Act expeditiously.”
