On Wednesday, October 18, the Council for Innovation Promotion (C4IP) hosted a reception in honor of our one-year anniversary.

The event, held at Charlie Palmer Steak in Capitol Hill, featured remarks from several members of Congress and IP thought leaders, including:

  • Representative Glenn Ivey (D-MD)
  • Representative Kevin Kiley (R-CA)
  • Representative Ben Cline (R-VA)
  • C4IP Chairman and former Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Andrei Iancu (2018-2021)
  • C4IP Chairman and former Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office David Kappos (2009-2013)
  • C4IP Board Member and former Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (1988-2010) Paul Michel

Notable remarks included:

Representative Ivey: “In a bipartisan manner, we’re moving things in the right direction… we want to make sure we continue to work together and push everything forward, so we can continue the dominance of the United States on [technology].”

Representative Kiley: “[IP] is an area where I think there are unique opportunities for bipartisan collaboration. And patent law and related areas [are] not necessarily the issues that are going to be subject to around-the-clock cable news coverage — but the impacts are, in terms of the impact on the economy and impact in terms of our national security or global competitiveness.”

Representative Cline: “It’s obvious that everybody is out searching for an issue that attracts bipartisan support these days, right? And I think intellectual property is that issue… [During my time on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet], I’ve gained such a respect for the value of intellectual property, the role of intellectual property in our economy, and the necessity for protecting those intellectual property rights.”

During our second anniversary year, C4IP is excited to continue working to promote strong and effective intellectual property rights that drive innovation, boost economic competitiveness, and improve lives everywhere.
